What is PCL Injury?

The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is a ligament in the knee that connects the femur, or thighbone, to the tibia, or shinbone. The PCL prevents the tibia from sliding too far forward under the femur and keeps the knee stable.

The PCL is injured when there is high force on your knee. This can happen during sports that involve quick stops and starts, such as football or soccer. It can also happen when you fall down and land on your knees in a way that pushes them together, like when you sit down with your legs crossed.

What are the types of PCL Injury?

The most common type of PCL injury is a tear. This can happen when the ligament is stretched too far, which can happen during contact sports or awkward falls.

There are three grades of PCL tears:

Grade 1 – The ligament is stretched, but not torn through completely.

Grade 2 – The ligament is torn through partially, but still connected by a piece of tissue.

Grade 3 – The ligament is completely torn apart and cannot be repaired surgically.

  4. Instability in the knee area

What are the causes of PCL Injury?

The cause of PCL injury is a trauma to the knee. The most common cause of this injury is a fall, which can cause the knee to bend in an awkward position, or hit the ground at an odd angle. There are other causes as well, including:

  • A blow to the back of the knee or thigh
  • Twisting your leg while it’s bent
  • Landing awkwardly after jumping or falling

What are the symptoms of PCL Injury?

The symptoms of a PCL injury can vary. The most common symptom is pain and swelling in the knee, which is often felt when walking or running. You may also experience pain when sitting for long periods of time, or even when standing from a seated position.

Other symptoms include:

  • Difficulty straightening your knee after bending it
  • Knee pain when pivoting the foot inward, either while walking or while running
  • Knee pain when lifting the foot or toes up off the ground

What are the risk factors of PCL Injury?

There are three main risk factors for PCL injury:

  1. Poor flexibility – If you are not flexible enough, your knee will be more likely to shift position, causing damage to the ligament.
  2. Weak muscles – Your leg muscles have to be strong enough to keep your lower leg steady and in place, so that it doesn’t shift out of place and cause injury to the ligament.
  3. Excessive activity – If you’re doing too much activity without giving your body time to recover and repair itself, it won’t have time to build up its defenses against injury.

What are the exercises for PCL Injury?

The exercises for PCL injury are squats and leg presses.

Squats

The squat is a weight-bearing exercise that can help build strength in the muscles around your knee, which is important if you have a PCL injury because your patella tendon attaches to your kneecap (patella). The squat also helps to strengthen the muscles in your hips, glutes and thighs.

Start by standing with your feet slightly further apart than your shoulders, with your toes pointing forward. Squat down by bending both knees and sitting back on your heels while keeping your back straight. Pause at the bottom of the squat then slowly rise back up to a standing position. Repeat 10 times.

Leg Press

The leg press is another weight-bearing exercise that can help build strength in these areas as well. It targets the quadriceps muscle group—which includes four muscles on the front of your thigh—and also works your gluteus maximus and hamstrings muscles.

To do this one properly, put both feet on the pedal of an adjustable leg press machine so that they’re slightly wider than hip distance apart (but not too wide). Then push through your heels as you lower yourself down into a seated position against resistance. Once there, use both feet to push back up until your thighs are parallel with the floor before repeating for reps as needed!

What are the treatments for PCL Injury?

The treatments for PCL injury can vary depending on the severity of the injury.

In many cases, it will be treated with rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE). You may also be given a brace or crutches to help stabilize your knee. If you have severe pain, a doctor may recommend that you use medication to manage your symptoms.
