What is Back Pain?

Back pain is a common problem that affects millions of people. It is a symptom, not a disease or disorder. Back pain can be caused by many things and affect people in different ways.

Back pain is often described as an intense or dull ache in the lower back and upper buttock region. The pain may radiate down the legs or feel like it’s coming from the shoulders.

What are the types of Back Pain?

Back pain is one of the most common reasons why people seek medical treatment. It can be caused by a wide range of issues, ranging from arthritis to falls.

There are several different types of back pain. The most common include:

Spinal Stenosis

This is a narrowing or stiffening of the spaces between the vertebrae in your spine. It can cause pain and numbness in your legs and feet.

Herniated Discs

These occur when discs in between your vertebrae burst or break down. This can cause severe pain, numbness, and muscle weakness in the area where it affects.

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Facet Joint Pain

This is when one of the joints between two vertebrae (the bones in your spine) becomes inflamed and painful. This can happen from osteoarthritis or an injury.

Spondylolisthesis (Slipped Disc)

When one vertebra slides forward over another, this condition can cause pain and numbness in your legs and feet as well as weakness or partial paralysis.

Disc Bulge

A bulging disc occurs when there’s too much pressure on a disc inside your spine—usually because of degeneration or injury—and it pushes outwards into the spinal canal. This causes intense pain and numbness in the back or legs that may come on suddenly after an injury or strain to your back muscles or ligaments.

What are the symptoms of Back Pain?

The most common symptom is pain that radiates from the back down into one or both legs. The pain may get worse when you bend, twist, lift objects, or lie down. Aches and pains in the low back are a common complaint among people who sit for extended periods of time.

Other symptoms include:

  • Numbness or tingling in your legs or feet
  • Weakness in one side of your body (weakness may be felt as if one foot is dragging)
  • Weak bladder control

The most common causes of back pain are:

  • Muscle strains and sprains
  • Poor posture – including slouching at work and sitting too much
  • Slipped discs (intervertebral disc prolapse)
  • Arthritis of the spine (spondylosis)

Back pain that occurs after age 45 may be due to osteoarthritis or degenerative disc disease, while back pain that occurs before age 45 may be due to a slipped disc or spinal stenosis.


Women are more likely to have lower back pain than men. This may be because women tend to have greater flexibility and weaker core muscles (the muscles around the spine).


Obesity can lead to poor posture and increased pressure on weight-bearing areas of the body such as your hips and knees. This can cause increased stress on your joints and bones in these areas, which can lead to lower back pain if you’re overweight or obese.

How to prevent Back Pain?

It’s no secret that back pain is a ubiquitous problem. In fact, it’s estimated that 80% of Americans will experience back pain at some point in their lives—that’s a lot of people!

So what can you do to prevent it? Here are some tips:

  1. Maintain good posture. Make sure you’re standing tall when you’re walking around, and keep your head up and shoulders back.
  2. Get up and move around regularly throughout the day—even if it’s just to walk down the hallway or go to the bathroom!
  3. Don’t sit for too long without getting up every once in a while to stretch out your muscles or take a walk around the office or home.
  4. When sitting at your desk, use an ergonomic chair and make sure your knees are slightly bent at all times (this helps engage your core muscles). Try placing a rolled-up towel under each knee for better support when typing or working on other activities like reading reports or emails from clients over email).

What are the exercises for Back Pain?

There are a lot of different exercises you can do to help relieve back pain, but the most important thing to remember is that you should always feel comfortable while doing them. If an exercise feels too hard or causes any pain, stop and try another one.

Here are some back pain exercises:

The Cat Stretch

Get on all fours, then arch your back up like a cat and hold for 30 seconds. Repeat 5 times.

The Cobra Stretch

Lie on your stomach with your hands under your shoulders and your feet flat on the floor (or knees bent). Slowly raise your chest and head off the floor until you feel a stretch in your back muscles. Hold for 30 seconds, then slowly lower yourself down again. Repeat 5 times total.

The Pelvic Tilt Stretch

Lie flat on the floor with knees bent and feet flat on the floor (or knees bent). Tighten your abs as if you’re pulling inwards toward the spine, then slowly tilt from side to side without letting your lower back touch the floor or allowing it to arch up off it too much as well as long as possible before returning to center position; repeat 15 times total per side

What are the treatments for Back Pain?

There are many different treatments for back pain including:

  • Exercise – this can include swimming, walking or cycling to improve the strength of your muscles and joints
  • Heat and ice packs – heat helps to relax the muscles and reduce inflammation while ice helps to reduce swelling
  • Massage therapy – this helps to relax tight muscles and improve blood flow
  • Medication – tablets and creams are available from your GP which can help relieve pain
